Choosing Your Keywords For Website

The whole business of search engine optimization begins with keyword selection. That is, you need to know which phrases people may search on when looking for products and services such as yours. Once you know which keywords are popular, you can work to ensure that you rank well for those words and phrases.

Most importantly, you shouldn’t assume anything. A phrase that you consider important may only be searched infrequently, while another phrase may generate many thousands of searches a month. Naturally, the high the number of searches, the higher the potential traffic.

Fortunately, you don’t have to guess. There are a number of excellent services you can use to find out exactly what people are searching for. If you have an Overture account (see next chapter), you can use the Search Suggestion Tool in the Manage Listings area of your account. Alternatively, you can sign up for a service such as WordTracker. Remember to try all kinds of permutations to cover all the angles. Then draw up a list of all the relevant keywords for your site. Don’t ignore the keywords with smaller search volumes.

Although fewer people are searching, there will also be fewer web sites competing for traffic. So you may find it easier to get good rankings with such keywords, and hence more clicks.

Getting more traffic from the crawler-based search engines depends on search engine optimization. What does that mean? Well, it’s the art of ensuring that your web site shows up when a web surfer searches for relevant phrases on a crawler-based engine.

If you surf the search engines forums, you will find all kinds of ideas designed to trick the search engines and provide you with an unfair advantage. But search engine companies aren’t stupid. They read the forums, too. A trick that wins you a little extra free traffic today is likely to be banned tomorrow. And if you are caught using such tricks, you may be penalized.

To guide searchers to web sites which provide the best match for the term they are searching on. If you can help them provide good matches for relevant terms, the search engines will love you. It’s as simple as that.

Although the crawler engines work in slightly different ways, the basic principle is the same. They analyze pages on your web site, and try to work out what the page is about. The systems which do this are very clever, but no automated system is perfect. So it’s up to you to help the search engine understand what the page is about, and which keywords you should rank well on.
